Join us for the Opening Reception of our latest exhibition, Trashion Refashion: Up Close.
This exhibit explores Bloomington’s annual Trashion Refashion event, a fashion show where designers repurpose waste and disposable items to make striking wearable fashion. The exhibit features items throughout Trashion’s 13-year history, including some of its most innovative designs.
University Collections, 525 N Indiana Ave, Bloomington, IN 47408
THE 2021 TRASHION SHOW
Due to COVID restrictions, we will not have an indoor event this year and will follow requirements set by the Monroe County Health Department to provide safety for participants and the audience. The show will be recorded on video. Online submission information can be found HERE. More photos and information can also be found on the Bloomington Trashion Community Facebook page.
Past years’ shows included outfits constructed from yoga balls, cat food can lids, videotape, Venetian blinds, and shrink wrap. Refashion designs give new life to unworn or discarded garments and household textiles —including commemorative t-shirts, graduation gowns, tablecloths, and a Christmas tree skirt.
Founded in 2009 by former Bloomington resident and artist Jeanne Leimkuhler, the Trashion/ Refashion show is a fundraiser for the Center for Sustainable Living. The show serves and supports self-proclaimed and professional artists and designers, and seeks to change beliefs and behaviors about what role clothing plays in our lives. A true grassroots event, Trashion/ Refashion celebrates inclusion and diversity in our community with models and designers of all ages and experience levels. Group submissions are encouraged!

The Trashion Refashion Show is produced by Discardia, a project of the Center for Sustainable Living. Designers make fashion out of materials destined for the landfill. Our runway event has inspired designers, students, community members, and even children to find new ways to reuse discarded materials in a creative way. It's an event for the whole family you don't want to miss.
Open to all skill levels, anyone can submit their design and any model can walk our runway regardless of body type or experience. We work with a variety of people, ranging in age from elementary school to senior citizens. With such a wide demographic of designers, our entries have become more challenging and inspiring each year.
Even the giant scale stage sets are made from discarded or unwanted materials every year!
